Profesionalna orijentacija je proces kojim psiholog kroz saradnički i savetodavni rad pomaže mladim ljudima da prepoznaju svoje sposobnosti i interesovanja i usmere ih ka kvalitetnom i pravom odabiru budućeg zanimanja.

Ova komplikovana i vrlo odgovorna procedura ima nekoliko koraka:

1. Prvi korak je detaljno informisanje o vrstama srednjih škola i fakulteta, kao i smerovima koji se u njima izučavaju i zanimanjima za koje pripremaju. Svako zanimanje traži poželjan sklop sposobnosti, osobina ličnosti i interesovanja važnih, a često i presudnih za uspeh u tim oblastima rada. Zbog toga bi trebalo da učenici razmisle o svojim interesovanjima i sklonostima, „jakim“ i „slabim“ stranama u pogledu školskog uspeha iz pojedinih predmeta, kao i nekim ličnim osobinama.

2. Drugi korak je testiranje u cilju provere koliko je odluka o izboru zanimanja u skladu sa sposobnostima i nivoom razvijenosti interesovanja. U našoj ordinaciji, psiholog nakon razgovora sa detetom i profesionalnog informisanja, procenjuje intelektualne sposobnosti, zadaje testove profesionalne informisanosti i test profesionalnih opredeljenja zavisnosti u od uzrasta.
