Pažnja je jedan od osnovnih pokazatelja procesa sazrevanja deteta, odnosno bazični parametar opšteg razvoja i sa takvom ulogom je najupadljiviji marker razvojnih poremećaja. Kada se osvrnemo na istorijsku organizovanost ponašanja kod ljudi možemo uočiti da se ljudi rađaju sa urođenim elementarnim reakcijama, razvoje pažnje omogućava format voljnog odgovora na stimuluse, draži i informacije iz neposredne sredine. Samostalna kontrola ponašanja, usmeravanje svojih receptora, čula je izraz razvijenosti najsloženijeg formata pažnje. Istorijski gledano razvoj pažnje je povećavanje sposobnosti da se prevaziđe težnja prema urođenim izborima. Pre usmeravanje i zadržavanje pažnje na određen sadržaj, dete uči da potisne prvi odgovor – urođeni odgovor na draž. Tek nakon ovladavanja sposobnosti supresije elementarnog odgovora dete može izražavati slobodnu volju kroz usmeravanje pažnje i tako na nov način otkriti svet oko sebe.

Posmatrano kroz koncept egzekutivnih funkcija pažnja predstavlja bitnu komponentu mentalnih procesa poput: usmerenosti, selektivnosti i kapaciteta obrade informacija, kontrola distrakcije, održavanje i deljenje pažnje tj. fokusiranost i flesksibilnost. Odnosno pažnja jeste osnov za intecionalno ponašanje, omogućava uslove za ostvarivanje voljnih namera, namera uslovljenih ciljem. Prefrontalni regioni, u kojima se odigrava većina egzekutivnih funkcija, učestvuju u regulisanju najvišeg forme pažnje. Neurofiziološke studije u svojim istraživanjima iznose da usled nesazrevanja mehanizama kontrole pažnje dolazi do razvijanja raznih poremećaja (ADHD, ADD, opšti poremećaj pažnje, opsesivno-kompulsivnih sindroma i sl.).

Primeri vežba za razvoj pažnje:

Pred dete postaviti dve slike koje se razlikuju u više detalja i tražiti od njega da ih pronađe. Materijal na slikama je potrebno prilagoditi detetevom interesu i znanju, takođe prilagoditi broj i veličinu razlika detetovim sposobnostima. Crtež poznatog zanimljivog lika (slon Dambo ili Farma čiča Toma) ili predmeta gde je određeni oblik označen brojem npr. Kod krave sve pod brojem jedan obojiti braon bojom, sve pod brojem 2 obojiti crnom bojom, sve pod brojem 3 obojiti ružičastom bojom.

Igra spajanja tačkica je pored vežbanja pažnje dobra i za vežbe koordinacije oka-ruke i osnova manipulisanja olovkom (grafomotorika). Početi od jednostavnijih oblika sa manje brojeva i u skladu stepena razvoja i zainteresovanosti deteta povećavati broj tački i formu oblika.

Dete kontrolom sopstvene pažnje ovladava svojim mentalnim procesima, uči da koristi i usmerava kako svoj mozak tako i svoju ličnost ka objektima i aktivnostima koje oseća da su mu podrebni. Time obogaćuje svoj razvoj, učenje i saznja o svetu u njemu i svetu oko njega. Detetu je potrebno pomoći usmeravanjem pažnje na različite aktivnosti, kao i održati pažnju na aktivnostima koja će mu omogućiti usvajanje određenih znanja (Prim. zakopčavanje rajfešlusa, skidanje-oblačenje patika, razumevanje oblika i boja, prepoznavanje zvukova itd.). Od posebnog je značaja kod deteta prepoznati i uvažiti snagu i pravac njegove radoznalosti i pružiti mu uslove koje će održati njegovu motivaciju.
