Logopedija je nauka koja se bavi prevencijom, otkrivanjem, dijagnostikom i tretmanom poremećaja humane komunikacije pod kojom se podrazumevaju svi oni procesi i funkcije koji su povezani sa produkcijom govora, percepcijom i produkcijom oralnog i pisanog jezika, kao i oblicima neverbalne komunikacije (definicija Evropskog udruženja logopeda- CPLOL)

Sam rad logopeda se bazira na tome da prevenira poremećaj, a ukoliko do toga dođe da preceni i da interveniše u skladu sa poremećajem komunikacije i uzrastom deteta. U samom radu logoped koristi razne tehnike u govornoj terapiji, a njihova svrha je da se poboljša komunikacija. To uključuje artikulacionu treapiju, rad na bogaćenju rečnika, usvajanju gramatičke strukture jezika, na jačanju mišića oralne regije.. kao i ostale tehnike koje zavise od same problematike.

Govorna terapija može biti potrebna za govorne poremećaje koji su se razvili tokom detinjastva kao i za one koji su nastali tokom života povredama, bolešću( insult, oštećenje mozga…).

Dete se intenzivnio menja i razvijja, od vokalizacije, preko brbljanja i prvih reči do sklapanja dvočlanih a kasnije i sve složenijih rečenica. Zato su neophodni redovni sistematski pregledi, kod logopeda, kako bi se razvoj deteta pratio od najranijeg uzrasta i time se pravovremeno reagovalo u koliko bi se uočio usporen razvoj.

Iako se logoped najviše vezuje za nepravilan izgovor glasova, sam opseg rada logopeda je daleko širi i složeniji. Najveći akcenat je ne samo na stvaranju govora već i na njegovom razumevanju. Kada dete razume sve što se verbalnim putem traži od njega, ima bogat fond reči, strukturisanu rečenicu sa pravilnom upotrebom roda, broja i padeža kao adekvatnom upotrebom priloga i predloga, tek tada se pristupa ispravljanju nepravilno artikulisanim glasovima u skladu sa uzrastom deteta. Logoped predstavlja govorni model i podstiče pravilni razvoj govora i jezika.
